Slow Living Activities for Summer
Hi friends! Summer is a busy time of the year and often seems to fly by, so taking the time to be mindful of what you're doing and being fully present while you're doing it is so important.
These are some of my favorite activities to do in the summer that help me slow down and soak up the present moment.
Go to your local farmer's market
There's nothing like spending a summer evening or saturday morning at a farmers market, perusing the fresh picked locally grown produce. It feels good to support a small farmer directly rather than a big chain grocery store. Make sure to bring your own baskets and bags! You'll look cuter carrying them and you don't have to use their plastic options ;) My favorite reusable bags can be found here.
Make homemade pickles
Once you get hooked on homemade pickles, store bought ones will never taste the same again. And they are fairly simple to make! Dill pickles and sweet pickles are my favorite.
Preserve the surplus from your garden
Can tomato sauce, pickles, make jam, freeze greens for smoothies, etc. This comes in handy in the winter months when you're desperate for something homegrown.
Make sun tea
There is nothing like the taste of sunshine infused tea in the summer! To make sun tea, all you need is simply a jar of filtered water, a few organic tea bags or fresh herbs, and some sunshine! Let the jar sit in the sun for a few hours and then chill in the fridge. Serve over ice!
Harvest and dry herbs
Forage plants and herbs from around your yard and dry them out for teas and salves during the winter months. My favorites are lemon balm, peppermint, chamomile, raspberry leaves, lavender, and holy basil!
Spend the evening outside
After dinner, head outside and sit on your deck, porch, patio, or somewhere outside and watch the sun go down with a friend or a good book. Leave your phone inside. Listen. Be. Feel. Breathe. Notice the cicadas and sounds of summer and the way the sky fades from cotton candy pink to midnight blue.
There is something about bring a little bit of nature indoors. A clean house feels even fresher with a vase of picked flowers. It just brightens your day a little!
Skip the shoes this summer and feel the earth beneath your bare feet. This is called "grounding" or "earthing" and there is scientific evidence that it literally h e a l s.
Reconnect with your inner child and run around barefoot every chance you get!
