The Truth About Your Drinking Water
Okay, I'll admit. I'm a water snob. I have to bring my own water to restaurants, out and about...I just can't. do. tap. water. When my mom unboxed a huge stainless steel water filter about 3 years ago, I was like "really...? you're going to display...that?" but I have never been so thankful for something I was so opposed to.
Unfortunately in the world today, one of our basic human needs of water isn't free, and most definitely isn't safe. As our earth becomes more and more polluted with chemicals and toxins, so do our water systems. Without a good water filtration system, our drinking water can quite literally poison us.
I think the knowledge that tap water is bad is pretty widespread for the most part, but I don't think many know what to do to protect themselves from it. Now, don't shoot the messenger, but if you have a $30 Brita Filter, you're getting what you pay for— a pitcher to keep your tap water cold in the fridge.
Cheap filter systems like that are simply not enough to keep us safe from the copious amounts of chemicals. Ideally, you want a water purifier, which we will get into later on in the post.
Nowadays, keeping ourselves safe and healthy has to be an investment. Good, clean, non-toxic drinking water is going to cost more than what we'd like to pay. But I can promise you- it is worth it.
The dangers of tap water
Studies have shown that pretty much all water systems in the United States contain "probable human carcinogens." Chlorine and other chemicals used to "clean" our water systems, are so very dangerous to our health. When these chemicals react with byproducts in the water systems, they create toxic byproducts that are not monitored or tested for.
Other toxic byproducts found in our water system include Dibutyl phthalate (1,000 times more toxic than chlorine), Chloramine (a blend of chlorine and ammonia), Haloacetic acids (human carcinogen and causes low birth weights, sperm toxcitity and neurological issues), Volatile organic compounds (nervous system issues, skin irritation), and Trihalomethanes (trigger production of free radicals in the human body- free radicals cause cancer!) I mean, I can't even pronounce those things. Do I really want to be drinking them?!
But don't worry, those are only a few toxins found in our drinking water. In one report, over 100,000 man-made chemicals were detected in public water systems. Other toxins include herbicides and pesticides such as Glyphosate, heavy metals, antibiotics and pharmaceutical drugs. No wonder this world is so sick! They are poisoning us through one of our most basic human needs.
Oh, and have I mentioned fluoride? There is great debate between whether or not fluoride is good for you. There are natural sources of fluoride, and I think that may have been where the notion that it's good for you came from. But, that is not what is found in our water today. Our water supply today is laced with a synthetic chemical called fluoride that your dentist has probably convinced you is necessary. It's quite the opposite, in fact, fluoride is a major risk factor in cancer development and many other health issues.
Fluoride poisoning is a real thing and young children are especially at risk.
What about bottled water?
So maybe right now you're thinking "Phew! Good thing I drink bottled water!" Unfortunately, that really isn't the case. In reality, bottled water is just as bad, if not worse than unfiltered tap water. Bottled water is filled with copious amounts of chemicals just as tap water (and even more from the plastic it is packaged in which I wrote more about in this post). A recent study done in Germany found that just a single bottle of water contains up to 24,500 chemicals. After being spoiled with good drinking water for almost 3 years now, I can't even drink bottled water without literally tasting the chemicals in it.
Plastic water bottles cause environmental issues as well. People in the US buy enough plastic water bottles per week to circle the globe 5 times. 3 million disposable water bottles are used each hour by Americans, and 70% of those plastic bottles end up in landfills and oceans. Are you sad yet? I'm sad. (Just another reason to ditch plastic.) They have basically tricked us into buying bottles full of liquid chemicals.
In those few short paragraphs, I have only begun to touch on the chemicals and toxins in our water systems. What you can take away from this so far is that tap water and bottled water (pretty much any unfiltered water) is poison and has serious health affects such as cancer, endocrine disruption, neurological issues, antibiotic resistance, fluoride poisoning, and so much more. So what can we do to protect ourselves from this?
How I filter my water
I use a Berkey Water Filter System. This thing is amazing and filters water so well, it's actually considered a purifier.
Unlike other water filters, Berkey filters remove viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites, harmful or unwanted chemicals (like chlorine and other chemicals we talked about above) as well as reducing toxic heavy metals without removing the beneficial minerals in water. You can quite literally put muddy, dirty, gross river water into a Berkey filter and it will come out clean. We even took our Berkey filter the last time we went on vacation instead of buying water bottles or having to drink the tap water and it was amazing.
I know what you are thinking, this thing is not cheap. But like I said before, our health has to be an investment. Purchasing a Berkey filter is a big chunk of money up front, but the filters last an average of 4 years before you have to replace them. And it is way cheaper than the health consequences of drinking tap water could ever be.
You can see how Berkey compares to other water filters by taking a look at this independent study.
The top water filtration options are Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, or a Berkey System. The Berkey System comes out to be the cheaper of the options, and in my opinion the healthiest and most beneficial. Reverse Osmosis and Distillation both remove the good minerals from the water, whereas Berkey systems do not. (You can read all about how the Berkey Water System purifies water here.) I use the Big Berkey, but there are many different sizes to choose from based on your family size and how much water you drink. All of the models available can be found here!
I encourage you to do your research and make a positive change to healthier and safer water. This is easily one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family if you are trying to keep a nontoxic home. If you have any questions or need help picking the right Berkey Filter for you, please feel free to reach out!
Shower filters are also important as well so as you aren't washing your body with toxic, chlorine filled water. It takes only 26 seconds for chemicals to absorb into your bloodstream once they hit your skin! Berkey also has shower water filters for a great price that last for an entire year!
By investing in a good water filtration system, we are taking one more step to remove toxins from our homes and our lives. If I don't take pharmaceuticals, why would I drink them? If I avoid chemicals, glyphosate, and fluoride like the plague, why would I drink those things? We must work fervently to avoid supporting industries that purposefully poison us. Stop buying plastic water bottles. Filter your water. Don't let them win.
