Need-to-Knows about GMOs


Hi friends! I haven't really touched on the topic of food on here yet so I figured now would be as good a time as ever to talk about big bad scary GMOs. If you're new to this whole thing, don't worry! I'm going to cover the basics of what GMOs are, why they are dangerous, and how I avoid them at all costs!

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. And no, it's not the same thing as cross-breeding or grafting plants. A GMO means that the organism has been genetically modified in a way that

does not occur naturally. (World Health Organization) This is done to withstand the tons and tons of pesticides and herbicides that are sprayed on the crops. Not only that, but GMO crops produce their own pesticides and herbicides. Meaning this stuff is INSIDE the food and CANNOT be washed off.

Simply put, there are two types of GMOs- pesticide producers and herbicide resisters. Pesticide producers do exactly that- the food produces pesticides and when the insects eat the food, it kills them. The food produces toxins lethal to insects and ALSO lethal to us. Herbicide resisters are immune to roundup (weed killer) so the crops can be doused in this stuff and the plants will still live. Humans on the other hand...not so much. Like I said before, this stuff can't be washed off because it's genetically in the food's DNA which we then consume and the DNA is transferred into our bodies.

Because GMOs are fairly new, we are unable to say "for certain" the health affects of GMOs. At least that's what Monsanto wants us to think. Most of the studies done on GMOs are done by Monsanto, the GMO company and creator themselves. Monsanto performs the studies and then writes the report about their own product.

 (If you think way back to high school science class, we learned a little word called b i a s) They can choose what information they do and don't release to us because they are in control of their own company. Much like the cosmetic companies, Monsanto's GMO crops are deemed "safe" simply because they say they are. I don't know about you, but that's not enough for me. Not when evidence so blatantly tells a different story.

A 3 month study was done by Monsanto themselves before GMOs were approved for safety. Affects of GMOs began to show up in the 4th and 5th month of outsider studies. Monsanto's 3 month study never even reached that point so they never saw the affects. Monsanto's roundup was approved for consumption even though their half-ass study was done by them themselves and had no obligation to release the real information to us.

Luckily, other studies have been done that are telling us the truth. Not so coincidentally- when genetically modified food consumption began in 1994, an abundance of health issues rose right along with it. Autism, allergies, asthma, and autoimmune disorders have increased drastically since 1994. It seems like everywhere we look someone has some sort of gluten or lactose intolerance, allergies, diabetes, cancer, IBS, leaky gut, mental illness, heart disease, infertility issues- the list goes on. All of these things are directly linked to GMOs in our food and there are studies to prove that. There is absolutely no argument that genetically modified food is safe after seeing these results. GMOs are banned in 38 other countries

Basically, GMOs were created so these farmers could produce more crops and make more money. In reality, they were created simply to poison us. It's a myth that conventional crops yield more than organic crops so the excuse of growing more faster is invalid. In fact, in other countries, non-GMO methods of farming yielded 79% or more increases. We could easily feed the world with real food, but it's not about that anymore. It's about money. Also, organic crops are actually proven to have better longevity than GMO crops and withstand better in flood or drought conditions and I will tell you why- because they are natural and that's how God created them!!!

When are we going to stop messing with what God has already made perfect? 

In the last 100 years in US, up to 93% or our crop variety has vanished because of GMOs. GMOs are not only affecting our health, but they are affecting the environment too by contaminating our soil, water, crops, and insects such as bees. They are contaminating our land so much that GMOs have even been found in organic food.

Monsanto's crops are technically, scientifically, a pesticide. And for some reason once it enters the walls of a grocery store it's all of a Nuh uh. Not for me. Our vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, etc, no longer give our body the nutrients that they are supposed to because our body has to digest them as a toxin, because they are simply just that- a toxin.

We are dangerously moving away from our food being food.

Now that you know what GMOs are and why they are bad, you're most likely wondering how we know whether something is genetically modified or not. I'm wondering too! In America, we aren't required to label GMOs. Monsanto and many of the brands that are probably sitting in your cupboards today, pay millions and millions of dollars to block GMO labeling. Monsanto—if GMOs aren't bad, what do you have to hide?

This is why we are fighting so hard to make GMO labeling a thing- because we truly don't know whether something is genetically modified or not. (Send an email to big name companies urging them to use GMO labeling here!) Because of this, we have to assume that if something is not certified organic or non-gmo, it is genetically modified. 

The five most prevalent GMO crops are sugar beets, soy, canola, cotton, and corn. You probably don't go to the store and buy these things in pure form off of the shelves but these things are inalmost ALL processed and packaged food. Over 70% of packaged food in stores contain GMOs!!!

As you can see, GMOs go way beyond the produce section. Not only are GMOs found in produce and packaged foods, but they are also found in animal products as well. Meat, fish, dairy, and eggs that are conventional (not organic) or are not certified as non-GMO, are fed feed that contains GMOs, infecting those animals with the DNA, pesticides, herbicides and other toxins, and then we eat the animals filled with those things that then transfer to our bodies. By now you're probably wondering, "what can I eat?"

If you want to avoid GMOs, the answer is organic or non-GMO foods. Something that is certified as non-GMO is different than certified organic. Organic means that there are no GMOs and NO chemicals whatsoever. Non-GMO simply means that the food is not genetically modified. There is still going to be a great deal of pesticides and herbicides on the food if it is not organic. Eating organic is a whole other topic which, trust me, I will be talking about! But if you are looking for food that is non-GMO, this is the label to look for:

GMOs are destroying our country and our land. They are infecting our water and our soil. They are stealing our butterflies and killing off the bees, and eventually us as well. The only way we can stop this is with the power of our dollars and what we choose to purchase.
