Essential Oil Safety For Cats

Monday, March 5, 2018

Unlike humans, cats lack the proper enzymes in their liver to properly metabolize essential oils and can be extremely toxic if proper safety is not practiced around cats.

There is much debate about a few essential oils that may be safe for cats, but since I have never been able to find any definite information, I use all of these precautions no matter what oils I am using. There are some blogs that even say essential oils are safe for cats. I choose not to take that risk, since there have also been plenty of people who have accidentally poisoned their cats with essential oils.

Oils that are the most toxic to cats include melaleuca (tea tree), citrus oils, wintergreen, pine oils, ylang ylang, peppermint, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, birch, and more.

1. Always wash your hands after applying essential oils if you know you are going to be touching your cat, their food, or their water. Avoid kissing them or snuggling your face into them if you just applied oils on your face.

2. Only diffuse oils in a room that your cat is not in, ideally with the door closed. If you are diffusing in an open room like the living room, make sure that the cat is free to leave if they do walk in the room. Cats will sense when the oils begin to be too much for them and will leave the room themselves if need be.

3. Avoid diffusing oils near or in the same room as your cat's food bowls or water bowls.

4. Be cautious about where you use essential oils to clean. Don't apply essential oils to dryer balls when laundering your cat's bedding, don't clean around their food area with EO sprays, and don't wash their food and water bowls with essential oils.

5. Research and be aware of the symptoms of essential oil poisoning in cats so you can take immediate action if need be. (Drooling, coughing, lethargic, sneezing, vomiting, sneezing, etc) Hopefully by taking these precautions this will never happen and you won't need to worry about it!

Having a cat doesn't mean we have to give up using essential oils. They just have to be used safely and with extra awareness. It's worth it for our furry friends!
