The Neighbors Aren't The Ones Poisoning Halloween Candy

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Alright, so there may be a few creepers here and there who stick a needle in a Reese's cup or put drugs in a Tootsie Roll, but I'm here to tell you that they aren't the main danger this time of year.

The people we trick-or-treat from are not the ones poisoning our Halloween treats— the candy companies are. Before the candy even hits the shelf or the bottom of your plastic jack-o-lantern on Halloween night, it's already laced with poisonous ingredients such as GMOs, artificial colors, artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, heavy metals, preservatives, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, and much more.

Candy such as Twizzlers, Reese's, Snickers, M&Ms, etc, will even now say Partially Produced or Produced with Genetic Engineering on the back of the bag. Some of the most common GMO ingredients in your typical Halloween candy include sugar from GMO sugar beets, high fructose corn syrup from GMO corn, fructose, dextrose, and glucose from GMO corn, corn starch from GMO corn, modified "food" starch from GMO corn, soy lecithin and soybean oil from GMO soy, cottonseed oil from GMO cotton, canola and other vegetable oils from GMO crops.

GMOs are extremely dangerous to our health, hormones, digestion, immune system and are even shown to increase tumor growth. This alone is enough to make us run far, far away from conventional Halloween candies. Learn more about GMOs here.

The artificial colors used may be the scariest of them all. These dyes are created using chemicals and often times petroleum. They contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and even arsenic. In many countries, artificial colors are banned in food or at least require a warning label, but of course here in the US, nothing of the sort is required. Food dyes such as Blue #1, Blue #2, Green #3, Blue #3, Red #40, Yellow #5, and Yellow #6 can be found in almost all Halloween candy and need to be avoided at all costs. Artificial food dyes in food have been linked to many behavioral issues in children as well as attention deficit issues. Think about all the kids stuck on ADD or ADHD medication (that doesn't even work and damages their body even further) instead of focusing on the true cause and source of the problem. These dyes are also found to cause cancer in humans and animals (check your pets' food and treats, it contains these dyes too!) and many other health issues.

Artificial flavors are also found in most conventional Halloween candy which wreak havoc on our health. Much like "Natural Flavors," artificial flavors are made up of complete garbage. It's a chemical cocktail being put into the candy and fed to our children. Artificial flavors are linked to more major health problems such as tumors, cancer, brain damage, seizures, as well as short term symptoms such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, etc.

Reese's Cup Ingredients. All these ingredients are GMO. TBHQ is a dangerous preservative.
High fructose corn syrup is found in almost all conventional candies and is one of the most dangerous forms of sugar to consume. HFCS contains mercury, damages cholesterol and the liver, and raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. High fructose corn syrup may also be hiding behind the ingredient names fructose, glucose, corn juice, maize syrup, or corn sugar. HFCS is almost always from GMO ingredients and is extremely harmful to your health.

Peanut M&M ingredients. Genetic Engineering is labeled and countless artificial food dyes are used as well as artificial flavors.
Maybe you already know this information, or maybe you've never thought of candy being unhealthy other than the fact that it's sugar and "sugar is bad for you." This Halloween, and even holiday season, make conscious and informed choices about what you are putting into your body, and the body of others.

Don't support Big Food companies and their dangerous practices by purchasing their candy. Don't poison the children that come trick-or-treating to your door either. Opt for an organic candy with fruit juice flavoring and coloring, or pass out a non-candy treat or toy.

If you have children and like to take them trick-or-treating, maybe come up with a trade for the candy they collect. Maybe they can trade it for a toy or a healthier version of a treat that you will provide yourself.

Halloween candy spending is expected to be 2.7 BILLION dollars this year (2017). That's $2.7 billion that's going into the pockets of the people poisoning our food. NO THANKS. I don't celebrate Halloween, and this is one of the many reasons as to why. The greed, consumerism, and toxic food is everything that I don't support, participate in, or eat.

I've only just barely touched on all the dangers and health risks so I've gathered a list of references and resources. I urge you to take a look at them and learn more and please spread this information as far as you can!
