4 Natural Acne Fighters

Monday, April 10, 2017

Hi friends! Do any of you struggle with acne? I'm going about 8 years strong. Acne can be really discouraging and if you struggle with it, I feel your pain!

I did notice a huge difference from when I started using an all natural skin care products. A little over a year ago I stopped using all my topical prescriptions, lotions, and benzoyl peroxide. I made a natural skin care routine post a while back, but it's a little outdated.

Lately my acne has been so bad I've been at the point of just about giving up. It's very discouraging to be healthier than I have ever been yet still struggle with this. Figuring out the root cause of my acne is a process in itself, but in the meantime I've been trying some new natural things that have been helping a lot so I wanted to share them with you incase you're looking for something new to try too.

I suppose we can call this an updated skin care routine. In the past I would use the same product combo in the morning and the same product combo at night, but lately I've realized that doesn't work for me. I do use the same products every day, but I don't necessarily have a "routine" anymore. I feel like if I switch it up on my skin it won't even see it coming and then the stuff I use will work better. (not really sure if this is true...just my strange logic) ANYWAYS...here are 4 natural products that have been helping me loads!

Apple Cider Vinegar
The mother of all things natural...ACV. Among it's many other uses, apple cider vinegar is great for skin and acne. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties which is exactly what you need for fighting clogged pores. ACV is also a natural detoxifier and anti-inflammatory. In my skin care routine, I put the apple cider vinegar on my face using a cotton ball. Drinking it is great for you too as the cause of acne is almost always on the inside of the body. Warm water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a little bit of lemon and honey is delicious and detoxifying! Make sure you are using raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar- that's the real stuff!

Green Tea Spray
Green tea is also great for your skin whether you apply it topically or drink it! I like to do both daily. Green tea has anti-aging, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It will leave you GLOWING. Aside from drinking green tea daily, I've also been using a green tea mist! I make a cup of organic green tea, let it cool, pour it into a glass spray bottle and store it in the fridge. Not only is this green tea spray great for acne, it's so refreshing too! Make sure you are using organic green tea that comes in a teabag that is unbleached and isn't treated with chemicals and toxins.

Essential Oils
I still use melaleuca and frankincense as I mentioned in my first natural skin care routine post, but I don't use them as consistently as I used to because I've also added two new oils that I love on my face- lavender and juniper berry. All four of these oils-melaleuca, frankincense, lavender, and juniper berry are great for acne and skin because of their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Juniper berry is especially fabulous at getting rid of scars and other red marks. I have a lot of hyper-pigmentation from my acne so juniper berry is a great one for me and lavender is very soothing to my skin. I normally use coconut oil as my carrier oil when I do use one.

Peppermint Soap
I still love the frankincense soap mentioned in my first natural skin care routine but I don't always have a chance to order from that company. Lately I've been using Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Bar Soap and I LOVE it. The peppermint is so refreshing and I can tell it's actually cleans my face well. Peppermint is also a great oil for skin health.

The last product that I use on my face is salicylic acid. I've been using these Yes To Tomatoes wipes which are natural and rated a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep database. I still need that extra boost that salicylic acid gives me and it's also way safer for you than benzoyl peroxide. Like I said before, I like to switch these things around. Sometimes I'll do just apple cider vinegar, sometimes I'll do apple cider vinegar and essential oils, sometimes I'll use the wipes and oils, etc etc. Although I only use the apple cider vinegar at night because it's a little bit stinky...haha. But the smell is easy to get used to and quickly dies down after a few minutes.

Aside from the wipes, I like to try my best to stick with all natural ingredients instead of products from a store. Although my skin is improving, I'm still struggling with it and am always open to trying new things that may help. What natural skin products do you use?

  1. I LOVE Dr. Bronner's soap, but unfortunately have some sort of allergy to it :/ I always get red & itchy! for a while I was just oil cleansing with jojoba, grapeseed, lavender, & frankincense, but I've been breaking out pretty badly after like 4 months of doing that. so right now I just wash with a natural charcoal face wash from Sparkle whenever I shower. things haven't really improved, but I suspect the acne is because my diet needs to be cleaned up. ha! that's next on the list!
