Spring DIY

Thursday, March 30, 2017

I'll admit, I've always thought the whole painted mason jars thing was cliche and well, not cute. But when I was scouring pinterest one day for some spring DIYs, I came across them again and I was kinda digging em for something different and spring-y. I'm usually a neutrals type of girl, but now that it's spring, I just needed some color happening. I'm also obsessed with all things pink lately, so I decided to mix it up a bit.

What you need:
Glass jars of your choice (Ball Mason Jars work best because of the raised texture)
Acrylic or chalkboard paint
Twine or Raffia ribbon
Sand paper
Flowers to fill the jar! (optional)

I started by mixing paint until I got my desired colors. I went with a cream, a tan, and a bright pink! Some of the DIYs for these jars suggested using chalkboard paint to get a matte look, but I used acrylic which also achieved a matte paint look.

I had to do three coats on each jar. It's important to let each coat dry fully before the next coat. I on the other hand, am super impatient and did the each coat too soon, so I kept pulling up paint. Eventually, I got most of the jar covered, and the spots that were imperfect were the spots I ended up roughing up.

After your jars are completely dry, take a piece of sand paper and lightly rub the raised areas of the jar such as the words "Ball" and "Mason" on the front. I sanded the brim of the glass, the raised measurements on the sides, the design on the back, as well as other random areas I wanted to scuff up.

When you're happy with how your jars look, take some twine or raffia ribbon and tie it around the top and tie into a bow! It's cute without this, but I thought it added a perfect spring feel!

I chose to use these as vases, but they're also cute just by themselves! You can use them to store pencils, silverware, greenery, anything!

They look imperfect and handmade, and that's what I love about them. I'm still on the lookout for more spring DIYs! Have you made any recently? I'd love to hear your ideas!
