Simple Ways to Be and Feel Healthier

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

Hi everyone! I wanted to share some simple things that have been helping me feel and be healthier. These are not time consuming or expensive. They're simple things you can do too!

Oil Pulling
I don't do this as much as I'd like to. But it's great for a morning after a day where maybe you ate out or just ate a bunch of junk. You can read more about oil pulling and how to do it in this post.

Lemon Water in the Morning
Before you drink your morning coffee or tea, drink a glass of lemon water first. (Make sure the water is pure, filtered water.) It's better to have warm lemon water but I mostly prefer mine cold, which is still okay! If you don't like lemon water or don't have lemons on hand, even drinking a glass of plain water will be beneficial. It's important to replenish the water you lost when you were sleeping, you just went 7-8 hours without drinking! Even if you don't feel thirsty you probably are. Caffeine is dehydrating so you will feel much better if you are well hydrated before you dip into that pot of coffee.

Take your vitamins and supplements! They are so important, especially with the winter months coming up. Make sure you're getting a good kind, a lot of the vitamins at the stores are filled with junk. Let me know if you need a recommendation! Herbal supplements are also something that I love. And it's so easy to find the right ones for you! There's hormone balancing supplements, mood boosting, and so many more. Whole Foods has a huge section that you can look and choose from. Whole Foods, Organic India, and Mountain Rose Herbs are great places to purchase supplements from.

Did you know that a handful of cashews a day is equivalent to taking Prozac? Cashews act as a natural antidepressant. Here is a list of side effects when taking Prozac. (The list is the same for other antidepressants as well)

I experienced a lot of these while I was on antidepressants. You might feel like you're going to die but at least your mind is happy right?! Wrong. I'm not against antidepressants if they work for you. But if you're of the majority-like i was-who don't feel completely destroying your body is worth it, there are other options! Cashews being one of them. They have many other benefits as well. You can read more here if you're interested in how and why they act as an antidepressant. I also highly recommend watching this clip from the documentary Food Matters (on Netflix if you wanna watch!) on a lady's story about taking Niacin-which is abundant in cashews-to help with her depression and even save her life.

Green Tea
Green tea is good for oh so many reasons. The main ones being it's rich in antioxidants and cancer preventing properties. It boosts your immune system, helps your skin, and much much more! I've been drinking organic green tea everyday. I drink a cup in the evening, but if you feel like the caffeine would keep you up all night, it's great in the morning in-lieu of coffee or for an afternoon pick-me-up!

Less Dairy
People are finally starting to realize how destroying dairy is to the gut and overall to the whole body. I have yet to be brave enough to cut it out completely because, well, cheese is amazing. But I have been trying to eat dairy less and when I do eat it I make sure it's organic. I feel so good on days that I don't have a lot, and even better when I don't have any at all.

More Water
Last but not least, I have been drinking more water. I literally have to pee every 20 minutes but that's the goal!! I've noticed how much more alert I feel when I stay hydrated and I don't get a foggy head throughout the day like I used to.

These are some of the major things I have been doing to improve not only my physical health but my mental health as well. Of course I don't do perfect, I still have my days where I eat junk or eat out. But because I am healthy otherwise, I feel pretty good. It's not about being perfect or quitting everything cold turkey, as long as you've got an 80-20 thing goin on. I hope you guys give some of these a try if you're needing a health boost! Thanks for reading!
