Natural Cold Fighters

Thursday, October 13, 2016

When it comes to a cold, there are two types of people. There's the people who just goes about their normal day, and then there's the people who think they are dying. I, unfortunately, relate to the latter. With the weather changing and cold air creeping through my open windows at night, I am already getting a cold. So I thought this would be the perfect time to write a post about some of my favorite things to kick a cold in the butt so you all can prepare for winter!

Believe it or not, some people actually go to the doctor for colds. Even worse, doctors will prescribe them an antibiotic for a COLD. The common cold is a virus therefore cannot be cured with an antibiotic. There is a time and place for antibiotics but a cold is not one of them. If you take an antibiotic when you do not need them, in the future when you DO need them, they will not work.*

*Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or a nurse. Please don't sue me. Of course visit the doctor if you feel you need to*
*PSA: If you are only diagnosed with a cold, you shouldn't be prescribed antibiotics. If your doctor does prescribe you antibiotics for a cold, you need a new doctor.

These are 10 natural things you can use to get over your cold fast without having to go to the doctor and filling your body with synthetic medication!

1. Vitamin C Chewables
I get the "Chewable Oranges & C Dietary Supplements" from Trader Joes. They taste like candy and I could probably eat the whole bottle at one time, but I normally stick with 2 a day. A vitamin C boost is always helpful especially in the colder months.

2. Elderberry Syrup
When I'm feeling under the weather, I take a spoonful a day of organic Black Elderberry Syrup from the brand Gaia Herbs. Elderberry supports your immune system because of it's rich source of Vitamin C. It's beneficial for everything from cough, colds, the flu, bacterial and viral infections and even tonsillitis!

This tea from Traditional Medicinals is organic and comforts and warms your body during a  cold. Like I said before, I completely shut down when I get even just a little cold so this really helps me feel better.

This is another organic tea from Traditional Medicinals. This tea does exactly what it says it does. It coats your throat and soothes it when it's sore.

5. Honey
Eating a spoonful of honey or honey in your tea will add extra soothing powers.

6. On Guard Essential Oil (doTERRA)
On Guard is a blend of wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils so not only does it smell AMAZING but it is so uplifting to your immune system! When you are fighting a cold, you're gonna need that extra boost. You can diffuse this oil or apply topically. It's great to put on the bottoms of your feet!

7. Breathe Essential Oil (doTERRA)
Breathe is a blend of Merges Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom essential oils. Breathe clears airways to helps easy breathing which is perfect when you're congested from your cold. I like to diffuse this oil or use it topically on my chest before I go to bed. You can also use direct inhalation.

I love the honey and pomegranate flavored ones. They have menthol and eucalyptus oil in them so they are very soothing to your throat.

9. doTERRA Breathe Respiratory Drops
These are like cough drops but for your nasal airways which is what I always need! They are all natural, soothing, and cooling.

10. Water
Drink y0o water. I probably don't drink enough water even when I'm not sick, but it's even more important to stay hydrated when your sick so your body can have strength to fight off your germs.

These are not all, but just a few things you can use to help with the winter bugs that we all get. A lot of these such as vitamin C, Elderberry, and On Guard are good to use as prevention, not just once we get sick. I hope you guys try some of these if you catch a cold. Stay healthy! xoxo
